Purpose : To determine the age- and sex-specific prevalence and incidence of optic neuritis in pediatric population in South Korea Methods : This is a nationwide population-based study using data from the Korean national health claims database to identify optic neuritis patients using the registration program database, which comprises ophthalmologist-confirmed pediatric optic neuritis from 2010 through 2016. All optic neuritis patients were classified into idiopathic optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), neuromyelitis optica (NMO), and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM). Prevalence, incidence rate during the study period were estimated. Results : Among 6,768,338 of entire population 15 years of age or younger, 606 patients had optic neuritis (49.3 % male) during the 7-year study period. Among the patients with optic neuritis, a total of 466 (76.9%) patients including 433 (92.9%) patients as idiopathic, 28 (6.0%) patients as MS, 1 (0.2%) patients as NMO, 4 (0.9%) patients as ADEM, had intravenous steroid treatment on hospitalization. The prevalence in pediatric population was 6.88 per 100,000 people. The cumulative incidence rate of optic neuritis was 4.5 per 100,000 people for 5 years. The incidence was similar or higher in females than in males in all age groups. Conclusion : We updated detailed estimates of pediatric optic neuritis in South Korea, and the prevalence and incidence estimates of pediatirc optic neuritis are comparable with those of Caucasians. It can help establish therapeutic plan within the healthcare system.
