Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of pediatric retinal detachment (RD) in Korean population over a 10-year period. Methods : A retrospective study of patients (below 18 years of age) who received surgery for retinal detachment between 2008 and 2018 at a single tertiary eye referral center was conducted. Results : A total of 51 patients (54 eyes) were included in this study, of which 4(7.8%) had bilateral RD. The mean age at presentation was 14.6±3.2 years. Of those patients, 30(55.5%) had rhegmatogenous RD, 6 (11.1%) had traumatic RD, and 18 (33.4%) were due to other types of RD. Postoperatively, 34 (63.0%) eyes had improved or stable vision. 13 (24.1%) patients received operation more than once. Anatomical success was strongly correlated with visual acuity outcome(P < 0.0001). Visual acuity improvement after 1 year of surgery showed strong correlation with macula status at presentation(p = 0.038). Conclusion : Visual and anatomical outcomes showed different results compared to the adults. Pediatric RD showed higher incidence of PVR at presentation and a higher re-operation rate compared to the adults. Macula status at presentation was associated with the visual success but not with the anatomical outcomes.
