Purpose : To report the clinical outcomes of Boston keratoprosthesis in the management inadequate postoperative visual acuity and recurrent corneal graft failure after repeated traditional keratoplasty, which has not been previously reported in Korea.
Methods : Prospective, observational case series. There were three patients(3 eyes) who underwent Boston keratoprosthesis for unsatisfactory vision and recurrent corneal graft failure. This is a review of clinical findings after Boston keratoprosthesis, data were collected regarding patients’ ocular history, surgical procedure(s) performed, and postoperative visual acuity, complications.
Results : The Boston keratoprosthesis were implanted in 3 eyes of 3 patients, and the follow‐up period was 5 months. Preoperative best‐corrected visual acuity (BCVA) ranged from count fingers to light perception. Postoperative visual acuity improved to 20/200 in all patients and to 20/60 or better in 2 patients at the last visit. No recurrence of graft rejection and no complication were observed during follow-up period.
Conclusion : Although the Boston keratoprosthesis is a more challenging procedure, it may present a viable option to salvage vision in patient with recurrent graft failure and poor prognosis for traditional keratoplasty.
