Purpose : To investigate the 3-month postoperative performance and safety after implantation of a new trifocal intraocular lens (IOL) in a Korean population. Methods : Prospective, multicenter, single-arm in which forty-four subjects (88 eyes) received bilateral implantation of the PanOptix IOL (Alcon, USA). Subjects were adult Koreans with no ocular pathology or eye condition other than bilateral cataract & expected post-op corneal astigmatism of < 1.00D. Postoperative examination at 3 months included binocular defocus curve, the primary effectiveness endpoint of this study, and other secondary effectiveness endpoints such as, binocular best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), monocular/binocular uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) at 4 m, 60 cm and 40 cm, contrast sensitivity under photopic condition with & without glare and subjective outcomes. Results : Binocular defocus curve at 3 months post bilateral implantation showed peaks with best visual acuity at 0.0 D (-0.049logMAR) and –2.0D (0.027logMAR). Binocular BCDVA at 4 m was -0.049 ±0.0697 logMAR. Binocular and monocular UCVA at distance (4 m), intermediate (60 cm), and near (40 cm) was 0.026 ±0.0987 and 0.077±0.1170 logMAR (4 m), -0.0025±0.1113 and 0.045±0.1253 logMAR (60 cm) and 0.029±0.1222 and 0.090±0.1274 logMAR (40 cm), respectively. Contrast sensitivity-with-glare were 1.673±0.1316, 1.907±0.1691, 1.539±0.2113 and 1.139±0.2038 log unit at 3, 6, 12 and 18 CPD, respectively. 84.1% and 77.3% of subjects reported Good-Excellent satisfaction at near and intermediate vision, spectacle independence at near and intermediate was 84.1% and 90.9%, respectively. Conclusion : In a Korean population, the visual performance of the PanOptix IOL showed good VA at all distances; particularly good near and intermediate VA (logMAR > 0.1); and high patient satisfaction and spectacle independence 3 month postoperatively.
