Purpose : To evaluate the role of preoperative macular sensitivity and fixation stability in predicting the visual outcomes of for idiopathic full-thickness macular hole patients after successful surgery. Methods : In this retrospective case series, nineteen eyes of 18 idiopathic full thickness macular hole patients were included. Patients with showing macular hole closure after 25G pars plana vitrectomy with peeling of the internal limiting membrane were included. Macular hole closure and ellipsoid zone defect diameter was measured by Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (DRI-OCT; Topcon Medical Systems, Inc.). Central macular sensitivity (2 degree), mean macular sensitivity (Average threshould, 37 stimuli), and fixation stability were measured by microperimetry (MAIA; CenterVue, Padova, Italy) before or 1 month, 3 months after the macular hole surgery. Results : BCVA, central macular sensitivity, and fixation stability were improved 3 months after surgery respectively. The postoperative BCVA (logMAR) positively correlated with the postoperative central macular sensitivity, but negatively correlated with the postoperative ellipsoid zone diameter 3 months after surgery. Conclusion : The postoperative central macular sensitivity, fixation stability and ellipsoid zone defect diameter could be good prognostic value for the postoperative BCVA after successful macular hole surgery.
