목적 : To investigate the incidence and prevalence of sixth nerve palsy in the general Korean population
방법 : The authors used data from the National Health Insurance Service–National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) which included approximately 1 million individuals (2% of the Korean population) with 14-year claim data (2002–2015). Subjects who were newly diagnosed as sixth nerve palsy (registration code H492) were involved as incidental cases by setting the 4-years washout period. During the 10-year follow-up, the incidence and prevalence of sixth nerve palsy and the profile of strabismic surgery in those subjects were analyzed.
결과 : Among the 1,108,253 subjects within the cohort, 509 new cases of sixth nerve palsy were identified during the 10-year follow-up. The incidence of sixth nerve palsy in the cohort was 4.88 per 100,000 person-years (95% confidence interval, 4.46–5.31), and male-female ratio of incidence was 1.35 (range, 0.90 to 5.54 in each age group). The prevalence of sixth nerve palsy increased with time. The incidence increased with age and peaked at 70-79 years. Strabismus surgery was performed on 22 of 509 patients (4.3 %).
결론 : We provide population-based data on the lower incidence of sixth nerve palsy than previous studies of Caucasians. However, the age and sex distribution of sixth nerve palsy showed comparable results.
