목적 : To study the macular pigment optical density (MPOD) in healthy eyes and in patients with macular drusen using Macular Pigment Screener II (MPSII®).
방법 : One hundred and twenty-six eyes of 126 individuals (51 male, 75 female) were retrospectively evaluated. MPOD were measured using a MPSII® which uses a heterochromatic flicker photometry (HFP) method and estimated values were reviewed.
결과 : Estimated values of MPOD were significantly decreased with increasing age (p=0.008) in general populations. In healthy population, estimated values of MPOD showed a trend toward lower values as the age increased, but there were no significant differences according to age, except for patients with dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD)(p=0.201). The MPOD in patients with dry AMD were significantly lower than age-matched normal controls (p=0.001).
결론 : The MPOD measured with MPSII® reflects the macular pigment density in healthy individuals and the patients with dry AMD. Early detection of risk factors for AMD and early detection of dry AMD may be possible with regular MPOD screening in elderly patients or when the MPOD is decreased.
