목적 : To investigate the association between cognitive function and severity of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)
방법 : We analyzed 543 patients aged 40–80 years with T2DM using the baseline data of the subgroups involved in a prospective cohort study. Each participant underwent ophthalmic and physical examinations, screening for depression as well as cognitive assessment with Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Association between DR severity and cognitive function was analyzed.
결과 : Patients were grouped according to DR severity as follows: no DR (n=343), non-proliferative DR (n=92), and proliferative DR (PDR) (n=85). Presence of PDR was associated with cognitive decline (Odds ratio: −1.14, 95% confidence interval: −1.96 to −0.31, p=0.007) after adjusting for age, sex, duration of DM, glycosylated hemoglobin, education level, alcohol consumption, smoking, body mass index, 24-h mean systolic blood pressure, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and presence of depression.
결론 : Presence of PDR was associated with decreased cognitive function in T2DM, suggesting that cerebral microvascular disease may contribute to accelerated age-related cognitive decline.
