Purpose : To evaluate the anatomical and functional outcomes following giant retinal tear surgery and to study the potential prognostic for the outcomes of surgical management for giant retinal tear
Methods : A retrospective, noncomparative, consecutive case series of 53 patients with GRT who underwent vitrectomy with or without combined scleral buckling between January 2013 and December 2017 with at least 6 months follow up at a single tertiary referral hospital.
Results : The retinal attachment rate for GRT was 83% after the primary procedure with final reattachment of 94.4% at last visit. There was a statistically significant improvement in term of visual acuity following GRT surgery(p value: 0.00). Almost 40% had ILM peeling intraoperatively and there was statistically significant different in term of visual acuity improvement in those with ILM peeling compared with those without ILM peeling.(p:0.023).
Conclusion : Patients with GRT underwent surgery achieved high rates of anatomical and functional success post-operatively. ILM peeling associated with better visual outcomes whereas presence of pre-operative vitreous haemorrhage associated with poor anatomical outcomes.
