목적 : To estimate the incidence and prevalence of superior oblique palsy in Koreans. 방법 : The authors used data from the National Health Insurance Service–National Sample Cohort (NHIS-NSC) which included approximately 1 million individuals (2% of the Korean population) with 14-year claim data (2002–2015). Subjects who were newly diagnosed as superior oblique palsy (SOP, registration code H491) since 2006, not between 2002 and 2005, were involved as incidental cases. During the 10-year follow-up (2006–2015), the incidence and prevalence of SOP and the profile of strabismic surgery in those subjects were analyzed. 결과 : Among 1,108,369 subjects, 410 patients were diagnosed with SOP in the 10-year follow-up. The incidence of SOP was 3.96 per 100,000 (95% confidence interval[CI], 3.59–4.36) person-years. The prevalence of SOP increased with time. There was male predominance in incidence (MF ratio = 2.3). The bimodal age distribution of subjects with SOP was observed, and the 2 peaks are at the 0-9 years of age and at the 50-79 years of age. Among 410 patients, 41 patients (10%) underwent strabismus surgery, and 28 of 41 patients (65.9%) underwent surgeries under 10 years old. 결론 : The incidence of 4NP was 3.96 per 100,000 person-years in Korea. Male predominance and the bimodal age distribution were observed. Patients with congenital 4NP more often underwent surgeries.
