목적 : To compare the effect of cataract surgery between unilateral cataract and bilateral cataract patients on cognitive function using Korean-Mini Mental State Examination (K-MMSE).
방법 : We performed cataract extraction with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation in 138 eyes of 87 patients, during 2014 to 2016 with subjective cognitive complaints. K-MMSE was used to measure cognitive function of the patients before and after the surgery. Analysis was done using paired t-test.
결과 : Among the eighty seven patients, who participated in the study, 36 patients underwent unilateral cataract surgery and 51 patients had bilateral cataract surgery. The mean age was 76.36 ± 6.68 years and 75.90 ± 6.47 years, respectively. The mean K-MMSE score was significantly increased in both unilateral and bilateral patients (0.91 ± 1.96, 1.15 ± 2.73 points, respectively). However, the difference between the two groups was not significant.
결론 : There was no difference of improvement of K-MMSE score between unilateral cataract and bilateral cataract patients after cataract surgery. This implies that cataract surgery enhances cognitive function not by increasing visual stimulation , but by acting with multiple mechanism.
