본문 : Introduction
Optic disc atrophy is commonly associated with prematurity, tumor, and hydrocephalus. The authors report two cases of optic disc atrophy as the only indication of a middle cranial fossa arachnoid cyst.
Case report
An 8-year-old girl was referred because of strabismus and amblyopia. Optic disc atrophy was found and a middle cranial fossa arachnoid cyst was observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A 6-year-old boy presented with complaints of poor vision. Both optic discs were pale and a huge arachnoid cyst was found on MRI. Optic disc atrophy may accompany arachnoid cysts in children.
Conclusion
Arachnoid cysts should be considered as a preexisting or coincidental cause of the optic disk atrophy. Careful evaluation in the brain and further follow-up for the neurological progress are recommended. |
