Purpose : To evaluate accuracy of visual acuity (VA) measured by final-year medical students using smartphone Snellen chart in Emergency Department (ED) compared with VA measured by final-year medical students using standard Snellen chart in ED and VA measured by ophthalmologists using standard Snellen chart in ophthalmology clinic. Methods : Smartphone Snellen chart was a picture album displayed E in the same size as showed in standard E Snellen chart. 50 patients presented to ED whose VA was requested by ED staff, were enrolled. Final-year medical students in ED performed 2 VA measurement techniques at 20 feet. First VA measurement was performed with smartphone Snellen chart. The second was performed with standard Snellen chart. In ophthalmology clinic, the third measurement was performed by ophthalmologists using standard Snellen chart which was set as a gold standard measurement. The difference of VA result was analyzed using paired T-test. The satisfaction was inquired. Results : In ED, average difference between VA measured by smartphone Snellen chart and that measured by standard Snellen chart was 0.42 line. With p value 0.518, there was no statistical difference between 2 techniques. VA measured by final-year medical students using smartphone Snellen chart and by ophthalmologists using standard Snellen chart showed no statistical difference (p = 0.074). The ED staff and final-year medical students stated that smartphone Snellen chart provides short performing time and simply technique. Conclusion : Smartphone Snellen chart is a practical VA measurement technique for medical students in ED as it provides no difference in VA result compared with traditional technique.
