Purpose : To describe ptosis surgery related complications and the management outcome.
Methods : A prospective clinical interventional study on 26 patients (28 eyes) comes to the Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology for such complications as recurrent ptosis (16 eyes, 57%), deformed eyelid (9 eyes, 32%), and sling material rejection (3 eyes, 11%). Management includes septal adherence release, sling removal, levator recession, skin and mucosal graft.
Results : Complications have been managed with 90.3% success rate. Undercorrected ptosis is most common and adjusted with applying another procedure e.d levator resection and/or tersectomy or sling operation using fascia lata. Lagophthalmos and ectropion may related to excessive tissueremoval and graft can by applied. We also find that sling operation has been wrongly indicated in patients with good levator function leading to lid lag, entropion or lagophthalmos and deformed eyelid. This should be a good lesson for oculoplastic starters.
Conclusion : Complications can be signification among patients with ptosis surgery. These can be dealt with sucess when patients are carefully evaluated and even surgical defined. Common cause for undercorrection can be wrong indication in Vietnamese patients.
