본문 : Introduction: One of the most common causes of cataracts in children is trauma. Most traumatic cataracts in children are accidental, but less commonly they may arise from self-inflicted injury. We report the clinical features and managements of three cases of bilateral cataract secondary to self-inflicted blunt eye trauma in children with autism spectrum disorder. Case report: All of the 3 cases hit their head or face or eyeball repeatedly for a long time and developed white mature cataract on both eye. Case 1 continued self injurious behavior (SIB) despite best medical effort and developed retinal detachment and eventually lost the vision of both eye. It took 5 months to control SIB of Case 2. The left regained normal vision after cataract surgery. But the right eye developed retinal detachment and lost vision. Case 3 had a prompt cataract surgery and his SIB was controlled in a short time. He regained normal vision in both eyes. conclusions: We suggest that personnel involved in the care of psychologically disturbed patients who have behavior of hitting head or face need to be aware of the potential visual damage of this behavior. Therefore, frequent ophthalmologic examination is strongly recommended for this patient group. It seems that SIB need to be controlled as soon as possible to avoid retinal detachment and eventual blindness.
