목적 : To investigate the effect of epicanthus on epiblepharon.
방법 : 119 children (mean age of 5.7 years, range 2-16) who received lower eyelid epiblepharon repair from January 2010 to December 2012 and 119 age-sex matched control group were reviewed retrospectively. The rate of epicanthus, severity of the epicanthus [inner intercanthal distance ratio (IICD ratio, inner intercanthal distance / 1/2 interpupillary distance)], types of epicanthus, presence of upper eyelid crease were analyzed and compared between epiblepharon and control groups.
결과 : The epicanthal folds are extremely common in both groups (98.3%). IICD ratio was higher in epiblepharon group (mean 1.39 vs 1.34, p <0.001), which was significant especially in age group of 4 or more years. IICD ratio decreased with growing in control, but remained higher in epiblepharon group. The epicanthus in which two skin folds from the upper and lower eyelid were fused at the medial canthus level without forming an insertion point onto the lower eyelid was more prevalent in epiblepharon than control group (P =0.001), which was significant especially in age group of 5 or more years.
결론 : Epicanthus closer to lower eyelid margin and high IICD ratio were associated with epiblepharon in Asians.
