목적 : To determine the prevalence of pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX) in Korean patients and its association with cataract and glaucoma. 방법 : A retrospective, chart review study conducted in the period from May 2013 and November 2013. A total of 4984 patients aged 50 or above who attended the Glaucoma&Cataract center of Nune Eye Hospital were included in the study. Each patient underwent complete ophthalmic evaluation, including visual acuity testing, slit-lamp biomicroscopy, applanation tonometry, gonioscopy and ophthalmoscopy. The diagnosis of PEX was based on presence of typical pseudoexfoliation material on the anterior lens surface and/or the pupillary margin in either or both eyes. 결과 : Of 4984 patients seen during the study period, 129 (163 eyes) had PEX in either eye, for a prevalence of 2.6%. The mean (±SD) age of the patients with PEX was 67 years±7.8(range 40-80 years). The frequency of PEX had a tendency to increase with age: 13.8% of patients aged 40-59 years had PEX, whereas 37.9% of those aged more or equal to 70 years were affected(P<0.05), with a female predominance 2.8% of women versus 1.3% of men, P<0.05). PEX was bilateral in 33(25.6%) of 129 patients. Bilateral PEX was found more often in females (22 patients over 33, 66.67%) than in males. 결론 : Despite the limitations inherent in a clinic-based study, this investigation provides an indication of the prevalence of PEX in South Korea. This shows that Korean patients have a prevalence of PEX(2.6%), inferior to that of Japanese(3.4%). This study confirms that PEX is an age-related condition and is associated with cataract and glaucoma, as in other races.
