목적 : To evaluate the effect of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy on the intraocular straylight in pseudophakic eyes.
방법 : In this prospective observational study, a straylight meter was used to measure the intraocular straylight after cataract surgery 2 months postoperatively. Sixty eyes were enrolled and divided into four groups of fifteen eyes as follows: group 1, mild to moderate non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR); group 2, severe NPDR; group 3, no diabetic retinopathy (DR) with diabetes mellitus (DM); group 4, no DR without DM. All the patients also underwent a macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) analysis.
결과 : The significant difference among four groups was in the intraocular straylight value (p<0.05). When adjusted for ages, group 2 showed the highest straylight level when compared with group 1 and the other two groups (p<0.05). And group 4 showed the lowest straylight level in comparison with group 3 and the other two groups (p<0.05). There was no significant correlation between straylight level and HbA1c level.
결론 : The level of intraocular straylight 2 months postoperatively was increased as the severity of DR increased. And also, the straylight level was higher in diabetic eyes without DR than in non-diabetic eyes. So the severity of DR could influence the intraocular straylight level, and, even though there is no definite sign of DR, diabetes per se can be a risk factor of increasing intraocular straylight. After all, straylight testing seems to be more susceptible to early retinal damage due to diabetes.
