목적 : To evaluate the effect of topical cyclosporine 0.05% (Restasis; Allergan, Irving, CA) on tear osmolarity in patients with dry eye disease. 방법 : This was a single-center, randomized, prospective, longitudinal trial. Patients who had been using artificial tears indicating the presence of dry eye disease were prescribed cyclosporine 0.05% and evaluated using tear osmolarity, tear break-up time, corneal staining score, Schirmer test, and the Ocular Surface Disease Index for symptomatic improvement. Clinical measurement of commonly used objective tests was performed at baseline and after 1,3, and 6 months. 결과 : At the end of the study, patients demonstrated statistically significant improvement in tear break-up time [5.95±1.90 sec (n=19) vs. 4.41±1.63 sec at baseline (n=81); P=0.018]. Other measures also exhibited improvement including tear osmolarity (309±35 mOsm/L (n=13) vs. 318±28 mOsm/L (n=80), P=0.507), staining score (0.35±0.70 (n=17) vs. 1.52±1.03 (n=48), P=0.102), Schirmer test (9.29±6.57 mm (n=14) vs. 8.44±6.70 mm (n=82), P=0.248), and Ocular Surface Disease Index (45.02±22.38 (n=15) vs. 49.11±22.06 (n=80), P=0.660), although the differences were not significant. 결론 : Over a 6-month period, topical cyclosporine 0.05% shows beneficial effects on tear osmolarity along with other commonly used signs of dry eye disease.
